Reflections on Divestment and Divest Harvard

I just picked up the December 2012 issue of Rolling Stone. On p.61, I read that Bill McKibben’s Do The Math tour was a “Game Changer” in 2012 and was proud that the climate movement had a mention in Rolling Stone. But I jumped when I read this line: “…the Harvard student body voted in favor of divesting the university’s $30.7 billion endowment from fossil fuels.” Yes, that’s right. We were mentioned in Rolling Stone!

Since the referendum, our work has been mentioned in The New York TimesTIMEother media sources, and now Rolling Stone. This shows that students on campuses across the nation are capturing the imagination of the wider society. There is an eagerness to see young people taking action and being effective in the name of our planet and our future. When we feel tired and discouraged, this is what we can remember: there is a world out there that is waiting to hear about students’ efforts and rooting for us to succeed.

Happy Holidays, everyone!
